How it grew

It started as an empty strip of field.

  1. Planted bare-root

The trees went into an empty strip of field as bare-root saplings, with compost, soil amendments and irrigation lines.

  2. Cut back hard

A year after planting, each young tree was cut almost to the ground, leaving a bud or two to grow back stronger.

  3. Shaped by hand

Every tree is pruned to an open vase: three to five main limbs around an open center, so light and air reach the fruit.

  4. First fruit

The very first orchard tour, at last year’s Fair, found a couple of small pomegranates. They were split open and shared on the spot.

Will there be fruit?
Probably not much. Late November is the orchard’s quiet season, when most trees are dropping their leaves. It’s the best time to see how each one has been shaped.
Where does it start?
At Farm Tour Pickup (map 38). The tour runs 4:00 to 5:30 PM; please arrive at least 5 minutes early.
How big are the groups?
Twenty people per tour, one tour on Friday and one on Saturday. Tickets are $25 a person.
What else do I need?
Admission to the Fair is free. Each vehicle needs a parking pass.
